Vulcan Raids Week 3 - RESULTS

A chilly wind swept across Brrrrrrruntingthorpe (thanks Patsy ) Aerodrome this evening, but this did not deter another high quality evening of racing from the young racers aged between 3 and 14 years old.

The skill level of all the racers is noticeably improving week by week. They are all producing some spectacularly close racing.
The racers are getting involved in some great battles and even in the youngest age groups you can see the racers deploying tactics to ensure they secure the best result possible.

In two of the events, victory was by half a wheel and in the third race it was still anyone’s race until the final 50m, such is the competitiveness of the racers.

Under 8’s – 8 Laps

The winner was decided in the final lunge for the line as Joseph Fletcher won by half a wheel from Hugo Sillifant.
With the 4year old and under getting a lap head start the pressure was on for the older rider’s to make up the difference around the technical Go-Kart track.
First girl was Millie Van Nierop, 2nd girl Chloe Hyde and 3rd Sophie Ward. First Under 6 was Nicholas Wood and first under 4 was Will Bradshaw.
With 33 young racers zooming around the circuit the awareness and control of the racers was first class, very well done each one of you.

Under 10’s – 8laps

If the spectators watching the earlier race thought that was a great race they were treated to another classic.
With younger riders getting a slight advantage, it was Alex Pole leading the pack through at the end of the first lap from Isabelle Rathbone.
Phoebe Gandy and Louis Jakobson were working well to close the gap at the head of the race as Holly Barnett, Fraser Ayres and Jamie Lydall started to move through the pack.
Hannah Stewart was once again producing great consistent lap times locked in battle with Jade Mansfield (great handle bar tape Jade) and Jake James.
Holly was leading the race at the mid way point with Fraser fighting to stay in touch.

With two laps to go Fraser attacked down the back straight and eased open a slight gap as the bell sounded. Holly was still determined she was not going to be beaten by a boy and dug deep to get onto the flying Ayres.
Jamie was also digging deep hoping the front two would just slow up enough for him to challenge.
Coming into the final 100m the sprint began with Fraser leading it out, Holly dived down the inside fighting to hold onto 100% record but it was Fraser who took the win by tyres width.
Last weeks crash victim Jamie finished a rewarding 3rd as Alex produced powerful push for the line to just pip Louis for 4th place.

Exciting racing but also great skillage on display by all. :O)

Over 10’s – 9 Laps

The speed in which these boys and girls fly round the circuit is getting faster and faster. The confidence of the racers is getting greater every time they pin on their race number.
Once again depending on ability riders where handicapped – this is to push the riders and develop better quality racing.
Jamie Thompson was the early leader, followed by Max Sillifant, Amy Garner, Arran Holman and Jasmine Gandy.
William Stone, Matt James, Max Lewis Clarke and Dan Jordan worked well to move through the pack closely followed by another quality trio of Jack Roginski, Josh van Nierop and Ross Barnett.
Dan took the lead for two before Jack moved through.
Oliver Haines and Isaac Gandy were both focussed and fighting to stay intouch as the laps flew by.
As the leading trio of Jack, Josh and Dan entered their final lap Ross and William were trying to contest the final sprint.
Like the previous week Josh lead the sprint out from halfway round the final lap. Coming into the finishing Jack was making Josh work double time as he started to draw level. It was Josh who celebrated the victory from Jack.
Dan produced his best ride to date to finish 3rd ahead of Ross and William.
1st girl was Amy Garner, another quality ride by the youngster.

Once again, great racing by a great group of racers.

 Welland Valley Cycling Club

Welland Valley Cycling Club are based on the borders of Leicestershire and Northamptonshire around the Market Harborough area. We have over 150 members who travel from as far a field as Northampton, Oakham, Lutterworth and North Leicestershire to take part in our various club activities.

Our aims are to enjoy cycling and have fun. We do this in many ways. The club has riders active in many disciplines including Races and Time Trials on the road and track and an active off road contingent competing in Cyclo-Cross and Mountain Bike events.  We also have a very active social scene within the club and aim to organise at least one trip to the Tour de France in July to watch a stage or two of the race.  Closer to home, after our evening events we generally relocate to a local hostelary for food and a drink.

Welland Valley CC are a Clubmark accredited club and run the very successful Go-Ride events for children between the ages of 5 and 16.
